Champions Return to a Record Night in Harris

At Sports Illustrated Stadium, Gotham FC opened their 2026 season surrounded by a record crowd of 10,796, a night shaped by memory, celebration, and the quiet understanding of what this team has become. A ring ceremony honored the 2025 NWSL title. A new star was revealed. The past was present, but the game still had to be played.

A Match of Control and Discipline

On the field, it was controlled, measured, and honest.

Gotham FC and the North Carolina Courage moved through ninety minutes without a breakthrough, finishing in a 0–0 draw. Not for lack of effort, but for how closely both sides mirrored each other. Every movement answered. Every space closed.

Gotham set the tone early, holding possession and creating the first real moments of danger. Esther González came closest, her header rising just over the bar, a chance that felt like it could have shifted the night.

Moments That Defined the Night

Before halftime, the Courage found their rhythm. Ann-Katrin Berger stepped in when it mattered, preserving the balance with sharp, composed saves that kept the match level.

The second half carried the same energy, structured, tight, and intentional. Twenty three shots between both sides, but only four on target, a reflection of discipline more than hesitation.

Another clean sheet for Gotham. Another sign of identity.

“It was a very competitive game,” head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said. “We neutralized each other in many phases.”

More Than a Result

And that’s what the night became, not defined by a result, but by presence.

Because beyond the scoreline, this was a return.

New faces stepped into the system. Familiar ones carried the rhythm forward. Rose Lavelle moved with her usual ease. Tierna Davidson marked her return. The foundation remained intact, even as the story continues to grow.

The champions did not need a win to be felt.

They were already there, in the crowd, in the ceremony, in the way the game unfolded.

Looking Ahead

A new season has started.

The standard has not changed.
